esha has revealed that she almost died while having her eggs harvested.

The increasingly popular procedure sees eggs extracted from the ovaries and frozen for future use as a means to preserve natural fertility.

“I almost died in January,” the California-born singer, 36, said during a recent interview with Self, recalling how after undergoing the proceedure, she later became unwell and too weak to walk.

Kesha eventually went to hospital where doctors discovered that she had developed an uncommon yet serious complication from the fertility procedure.

This was attributed to her weakened immune system – a result of her recent common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) diagnosis.

CVID is a group of conditions that affect how the body’s immune system makes antibodies and fights infections. It is a lifelong condition that affects one in 25,000 to 50,000 people globally.

The condition puts Kesha at an especially high risk of developing recurrent, and potentially serious, infections.

As with any medical procedure, there are health risks associated with egg freezing, however according to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority it is considered “mostly safe”.

The Timber hit-maker was forced to spend nine days in hospital, but said that only now does she “finally feel recovered”.

“It took a couple months. It was horrifying,” she added to the publication.

Speaking candidly on her decision to freeze her eggs, Kesha said it was a case of wanting to keep her options open for the future.

“I just was taking my reproductive health into my own hands,’ she said. “And I stand by everyone doing that and [honouring their] body,” she explained.
