Daniel Levy tells Tottenham fans why Spurs appointed Ange Postecoglou as new manager

The Australian has signed a four-year contract in north London after delivering a domestic treble at Celtic

aniel Levy has further explained Tottenham’s thinking behind the appointment of Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs’ latest protracted managerial search finally came to a close on Tuesday, when they announced the arrival of Postecoglou as Antonio Conte’s long-term successor as head coach on a four-year contract until 2027.

The first Australian ever to take charge of a Premier League club arrives in north London having greatly enhanced his reputation in Scotland, winning five out of six domestic trophies available during two hugely successful seasons at Celtic that followed a stint in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos and delivering a domestic treble this term.

Tottenham are looking to return to the club’s rich attacking traditions after the more dour brands of football deployed by the likes of Conte and Jose Mourinho, with Postecoglou’s commitment to an exciting style and ability to develop young players clearly instrumental behind his appointment.

Addressing Postecoglou’s arrival again during a video call with representatives of supporters groups ahead of the launch of Tottenham’s new fan advisory board, chairman Levy said: “We made a conscious decision that we wanted a coach who would understand what we really wanted as a club, which was to play attacking football, to enable everyone to enjoy coming to a match and be entertained, and also someone who understood the importance of the academy.”

Postecoglou sent his first message to Spurs fans on Friday, pledging an exciting “new direction” for the team as he vowed not to leave any stone unturned in his pursuit of glory.

“Hi everyone, it’s great to finally get started as the manager of this great football club,” Postecoglou told SPURSPLAY. “I’m really looking forward to our task ahead.

“I think it’s an exciting opportunity for us to now set off in a new direction, play football and create an environment that embodies the values and traditions of this fantastic football club, hopefully a team you can all be proud of and, more importantly, get excited by.

“I can assure you that, right through pre-season, we won’t leave any stone unturned – myself, the staff and the players – to make sure that, when the league comes around, you’ll all be as excited as I am about the season ahead.

“I really look forward to seeing everyone at the stadium, in particular at our first home game, and look forward to the journey ahead.”
